They Witness The Saddest Thing In The Basement Of An Abandoned House

Dog barking could be heard coming from what appeared to be an abandoned building in a calm Detroit suburb area. They had no idea, though, that this property was hiding a terrible and depressing truth.

The very old wooden house was in a residential area on the outskirts of Detroit, and it had been vacant for more than a month.

However, the neighbors started to hear barking from within the building even though the previous owners had already left. How is that possible? Was there an animal trapped within, or was it just their imagination?

Unfortunately, this was not the first time something similar occurred. It turned out that several pets had been abandoned at that same home in the past. The neighbors had intervened on their own the previous three or four occasions, breaking into the house to rescue the terrified dogs.

However, they had become weary of dealing with the same issue repeatedly. There had to be action taken! The neighbors became aware that the barking continued as the days went by. However, the barking only grew louder and louder.

Finally, they made the decision to get in touch with the organization in charge of overseeing the house, the Detroit Land Bank Authority. Meanwhile, a neighbor advised contacting the Detroit Dog Rescue. DDR, a nonprofit group, has in purpose to save as many abandoned, neglected, and lost dogs as is humanly possible.

Fortunately, help arrived quickly. When the DDR animal control officers arrived and entered the premises, they were shocked by what they saw.

Bentley, a 5-year-old Saint Bernard, had been imprisoned in the cellar without access to food or water. How miserable!
Even worse, the dog did not even have room to stretch because the basement of the house was so little! There were no stairs and the area was dark and unsettling, so it makes sense why the helpless dog screamed for assistance for so long.

The unfortunate puppy weighed only 40 pounds and was extremely dehydrated. The rescuers were not shocked to see the conditions the dog was in because he had been locked in this hellhole for more than a week.

Within the two first weeks, Bentley had already put on a good amount of weight and had regained his lost vitality. He looked better than ever, in fact.

Furthermore, he was able to recuperate from his skin damage after receiving the right care. The DDR caregivers are true heroes! Additionally, Bentley never missed an opportunity to run across the new grass and adored playing with the other rescue dogs in the shelter. The good news did not stop there, though! A month after her rescue, an unexpected event occurred.

Eventually, Bentley’s family discovered the dog was alive after they spotted one of his photos on DDR’s Facebook page.

It turned out that on Easter, Bentley had been taken from his backyard. Unfortunately, the dog had no microchip, but his family had distributed posters of him across the area.

Perhaps the kidnapper fled the scene in fear after discovering Bentley’s photos affixed to each and every lamppost, leaving her alone in the cellar.

After a month, they were still unable to uncover any information on the dog’s whereabouts. The day Bentley’s photo appeared on DDR’s Facebook page was the happiest day of the family’s life since they had almost given up hope.

Bentley is glad to be back with his loved ones, despite the fact that he is still recovering. One of the rescuers recalled, “Everybody was just so delighted and extremely heartbroken over it.”

Besides all the struggles, Bentley and his family had the joyful conclusion they deserved!
