A two-year-old livestock guardian dog, a Great Pyrenees breed, bravely defended his herd of sheep from a group of over ten attacking coyotes.

Casper, together with Daisy, was keeping watch over the flock of sheep when the aggressive animals approached under the cover of night in early November. Their owner, John Weirville, who owns Ewe Can Do It Naturally in Dekalb County, Georgia, heard the coyotes’ howls outside his residence.

In the middle of the night, Weirville noticed that Daisy was observing the sheep who were cornered against a fence, and Casper was surveying the coyote pack. As the pack of coyotes drew closer, Casper rapidly sprang into action.

Weirville pointed to a section of his property and said, “I could see the coyotes running around in this area. Casper had gone when I arrived. After fighting for thirty minutes, Casper was able to kill eight of the coyotes before disappearing and driving the rest away. None of the sheep were harmed, but Casper was not as fortunate.”

After searching for the dog, Weirville, his family, and neighbors discovered parts of Casper’s tail and a bloody trail, but they were unable to locate him. They feared the worst. However, two days later, Casper appeared suddenly, and Weirville found him curled up in the chicken hutch.

Weirville said, “He looked like death, I mean terrible.” When he arrived home, Casper only gave him a quick glance and said, “Boss, stop looking at how terrible I look; just take care of me.”

The dog has resided at Lifeline Animal Project for the past month after being transferred there. His condition was so severe that the veterinarians were unsure if he would make it. However, he has undergone multiple surgeries, and his injuries are slowly healing as he continues to recover.

The veterinary clinic is providing its services free of charge, and it will take several months for Casper to recover completely. However, Weirville is pleased with Casper’s progress.

Recently, Weirville was visited by Casper. He hugged Casper tightly, saying, “I cannot even express how thrilled I am to see him.” When he first saw Casper’s injuries, he thought that he would not survive, but now he has changed his mind and is optimistic that Casper will soon be able to return to his side.
