Dogs are often not seen as potential pets, so they end up in shelters to be euthanized or, more often, are left adrift on roads to die of hunger and thirst.

That was exactly how they found Matilda. She was heartbroken and in pain, alone in the streets and she could not stop crying.

A group of youngsters called Tina Solera, the founder and president of Galgos del Sol Animal Rescue to tell her about Matilda’s dire situation.

Her thin body showed all her bones, as she weighed less than half the weight that corresponded to an animal of her breed and her age.

Galgos del Sol Animal Rescue specializes in the rescue of greyhounds. To be more exact, they work especially with Spanish hunting greyhounds, as many of these animals are abandoned or killed each year when the hunting season ends in the European nation.

Tina wrote on Facebook that she was passing through the town the poor dog was in when she got the call. She thought that, when it came to Matilda’s weakness, she could rescue her without a trap, but things did not work out as well as she had hoped. Some of the local youths patiently helped her put the dog in the cage.

Matilda, despite her terrible condition, was extremely stressed. The screams that the dog emitted, as well as her crying, were very distressing and ended up upsetting the entire team. She tried several times to bite people who tried to help her.

With patience, perseverance and tact, Tina and her helpers managed to get Matilde to safety, so she was immediately taken to a veterinary hospital. She continued to scream and cry throughout the trip and Tina did not know if the dog herself was doing it out of pain or fear.

Tina, who moved with her family from the UK to Murcia, Spain, is a mother of two and said her heart was broken by Matilda’s screams.

“I have aged about 30 years in the last hour, hearing her cry and scream is so stressful that it makes you feel useless. She is safe now,” Tina expressed.

The dog was emaciated, covered in ticks and had a fever. She had a full body X-ray and scan done to see if she had anything broken, but nothing obvious showed up, so she was given painkillers and put on a soft bed to sleep.

A few days later, Matilda was feeling much better. She eventually screams, but it is normal because of all the emotional trauma this pet suffered from her time on the streets.

For Tina, seeing Matilda wagging her tail is an indescribable emotion. It is a sign that she can believe in humans again and that she is on her way to having a normal life.
