The owner didn’t want his dog anymore, a French Mastiff, and he found the foremost inhumane, unconscionable and easiest method to urge obviate her. He buried her alive in mud and stones, and then waited for her to die.
The problem was that the 10 year old Mastiff wasn’t able to die. She was struggling to remain alive in her grave, hoping someone would spot and save her from certain death. Luckily, animal lover Pedro Dinis was walking his own dog, a pit bull, through the empty lot where the Mastiff was buried.
He noticed something protruding from the soil, and when his bulldog reacted, he stopped to look better. What he saw shocked him. It was a dog’s head barely visible in the mound of dirt. Noticing that the dog was still alive, Pedro and his dog quickly got into action to save the mastiff.
The Mastiff, which Pedro named Athena, after the Greek Goddess of War, had managed to free her head presumably because she was buried in shallow within the building site. As Pedro acknowledged while digging to rescue the dog, Athena wasn’t ready to fully free herself.
She was anchored into the bottom by her leash which was tied to an important bag of rocks. The owner had obviously wanted to be sure his dog didn’t shake the Hell’s hole! Pedro found that the mastiff was covered in mud, weak and dehydrated, indicating that she must been buried a few hours ago.
“Only her head was visible and it had been difficult to ascertain given the quantity of earth covering her,” Pedro said, adding that “he was in the proper place at the proper time that made happen his life to be saved.”
This is what happened in the right place, and therefore at the right time. Athena stayed calm, possibly due to Hell bull’s presence, as Pedro carefully removed the dirt and stones to free the Mastiff from her muddiness. Pedro didn’t want to harm or panic Athena by employing a shovel, so he used his hands to scoop away the dirt.
When he rescued her, he had to feed Athena a lot of water in order to hydrate her. Finally, Athena was free! But she was too weak to manipulate. Pedro took her to a veterinary clinic where she was treated for shock and dehydration with lots of intravenous fluids.
The veterinarian also found that there are enough signs that Athena, who suffers from arthritis, has been abused through her life. After treatment, Athena was taken by the animal rescue SOS Dogue De Bordeaux. During her months of rescue, Athena was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Delfosse.
They are the founders of the rescue where she found comfort and happiness, pending the court case against her owner. Since Athena has a permanent identity certificate, the authorities are ready to track down her owner.
As for dog’s savior, Pedro said he shared the photos of Athena’s rescue to boost awareness about animal cruelty. A few months after the owner was convicted, Athena gave up the ghost peacefully under the loving care of her adoptive family.
