This is Parker, the female stray dog picked up in New Smyrna Beach and taken rapidly to Southeast Volusia Humane Society.

When Sophie’s Circle Dog Rescue saw Parker they took her into their own rescue as a shelter is not the best environment for a dog like Parker to recover. They immediately placed her in a loving foster home with experienced dog foster Mona Dera of Port Orange.

The next day Parker was taken to Ravenwood Vet Clinic where she was diagnosed with Demodex Mange and a severe case of hookworm. Parker was in a lot of discomfort to start, but with much TLC and attention she quickly recovered and started enjoying life again.

Her foster mom, Mona, says she is a very sweet dog, a fast learner and just loves to be with people. Parker likes most dogs, also loves dinner time and walking plus she gets along with other animals. Moreover, she posted Parker’s before and after picture on her Facebook saying: “Seeing these pics side by side gives me chills… this difference took only 4 weeks… this is what keeps me and others like me going…!!”

Quite a lot of some local rescue groups do not have physical facilities where they can keep animals, or if they do, there are limited spaces. So without foster homes to help house and take care of the animals, the rescue groups become limited on how many pets they can save from bad situations or pull from shelters.

Fostering from an animal shelter helps in several ways, and mainly to avoid the animal being in the shelter at all. Despite the best efforts of staff, a shelter can often be a stressful place for a pet and can often cause them to shut down or behave differently. A normally very friendly and happy dog or cat can become depressed, nervous or even in extreme cases aggressive in a shelter cage.
That is not an accurate reflection of the animal’s true self.

With the animal in a loving foster home, it will be much less prone to become depressed and its true personality can shine. Also, the foster parent can pass along more information about the pet’s personality to potential adopters, which helps with making the right match for adoption.
