Moroccan activists have been facing a terrible situation with all the stray dogs. The Moroccan Ministry of the Interior agreed to resolve this situation through sterilization. However, they have been ignoring, since the number is not the biggest problem but what the puppies are doing to survive, because they are literally starving.
Health workers rescued more than a hundred stray puppies and took them to a local shelter without access to any food.
The puppies roamed the streets of Agadir, Morocco.
This action caused the puppies to act in the worst way and eat each other in order to survive. In the past, stray dogs used to be slaughtered with barbaric methods, with a shot to the head or poisoned food.
In theory, the puppies should be tagged, neutered and returned to the streets , even if a permanent home is not found for them, at least an attempt should be made to control the population.
The Moroccan authorities have not acted diligently.
Lucy Austin, founder of Morocco Animal Aid, and activist Morgan Hekking published heartbreaking images showing the misery and rot in which the puppies live.
Apparently the kennel manager does not allow the rescuers to feed the furry ones. Rescuers have seen the puppies chewing on the remains of other puppies that did not survive this terrible situation.
The images are difficult to contemplate for any animal lover, sad puppies are seen, deprived of basic needs.
The group of activists highlights the following:
“The agreement to stop the slaughter of stray dogs is not worth the paper it is written on. Morocco, what a shame! When will he learn that this inhumane treatment of animals is ineffective and shameful for his country? Tourists prefer to see healthy and vaccinated dogs on the streets than images of this bloodbath. Wake up and do something to stop this slaughter.”
Sometimes the rescue teams can enter this canine slaughterhouse, they are only allowed to give it water and clean the great mountains of feces in which these puppies live.
Hundreds of puppies share a small space in terrible conditions. Activists insist that spaying, vaccinating and releasing all stray dogs is the only ethical and humane solution.
In another part of the statement you can read:
“International news but still no change for these dogs. They continue to kill and eat each other. The city piles them up in this extermination camp. Their situation remains unknown. They die every day and still no one with power defends them. We are desperate. Please help us stop this. Share their story and raise the flag for them. #FREETHEMOROCCANDGS”.
We cannot continue to allow such unfair treatment against our animals. Please, let’s raise our voices and demand solutions for the well-being of all the furry ones deprived of basic needs . They only count on us, it is time to act and seek the change we want to see.
