All stories of abandonment are heartbreaking. But the way Perry was abandoned is one of the most shocking and tragic.
One morning a few weeks ago, staff at New York’s Wanderer’s Rest Humane Association heared about a dog. A Pyrenean Mountain Dog had been abandoned in front of their shelter.
Next to him was a note that read: “I’m over 10 years old. I can’t walk anymore.”
Due to his inability to move, the dog had clearly been dragged in a sled to the shelter. He was left there on his own. Outraged, shelter staff shared photos of Perry on Facebook. This reminding their followers that there are always other solutions if you want or need to give up a pet.
Leaving a dog outside alone, especially an old and infirm one, is not one of them. Poor Perry had a multitude of problems. His matted fur had caused a skin infection. The ticks that bit him had transmitted a couple of diseases, including Lyme disease.
Fortunately, it appeared that his inability to walk was caused by the above issues. His weight was potentially reversible. And indeed, after intense medical treatment and rehabilitation, Perry is getting stronger every day.
He is now able to walk (even by himself for several minutes) and enjoy every second of his new youth! Perry is now in a foster home and expecting a loving forever family. We wish him the best, he truly deserves it!
Remember that having a pet is a lifelong commitment. When you adopt a pet, you accept the responsibility to give it love and all the care it needs, even as it gets older and weaker.
