A horrified woman finds an image in an empty field in Texas that looks like something of one of the worst nightmares an animal lover can have.
In an open field and out in the open was a poor abandoned animal that seemed to be in excruciating pain.
The dog was severely malnourished and starving and did not move at all . The woman rushed to the nearest veterinary emergency center.
But the response he received from the veterinary team was not what he expected. Everyone there thought that he should get the poor animal “out of misery”, by sacrificing it.
By leaving him alone in the middle of the field, this person sentenced him to a slow and very painful death.
That’s when the Dogs NY Rescue team comes in. They took the body of a 6-year-old shepherd dog that had been abandoned by its owner.
Stacey Silverstein, the foundation’s co-founder , believes that when the dog became completely paralyzed, its former owner, instead of seeking help, decided to abandon it.
The veterinary team believes there is no hope for Hugey. Sara commented that her guidelines are not as encouraging as they could be:
“You must sacrifice him, they told me, there is no hope for him. He’s paralyzed, he can’t even relieve himself on his own, he’s not going to make it.”
The diagnosis was even worse than they thought: Hugey had discospondylitis, an infection of the intervertebral discs, which was eating away at his spinal cord.
The infection, if treated in time, would not have caused paralysis of this magnitude.
Hugey has pieces missing from his marrow and further tests showed he also has heartworms. A disease that can be fatal if not treated in time.
But as we well know the commitment of the guys at Rescue Dogs NY, they don’t give up on any of their puppies, no matter how difficult the challenge may seem.
Hugey couldn’t be moved in those conditions, so he spent the next two weeks receiving treatment at the same hospital where they wanted to put him down.
He was eventually transferred to a clinic on Long Island where he was given expensive treatment to alleviate his infection. But it was all worth it in the end, medicine and physical therapy sessions did wonders for Hugey.
Six weeks later he could walk again!
It was a gradual process, first he started using wheels, then a human support sling and finally he was able to walk, run, jump, it’s a miracle.
It is also noticeable how Hugey also feels his progress, at the beginning of the treatment Stacey saw him depressed and hopeless, he himself had already given up.
But as the weeks go by, his face lights up, his spirits get better, he’s so happy and grateful, it’s beautiful.
Hugey is looking for a permanent home and the best thing is that any type of family suits him. He really is a great boy. Everyone who knew him loved him: the children, the other dogs, the cats. He is very gentle, polite, loves to play.
It is truly amazing how much you can achieve with love and perseverance. Share this touching story of recovery and respect to our canine friends!
