Every year, thousands of young wild animals are “rescued” by kind people wanting to help them. As a general rule, a wild adult mammal who is not moving away from you is either ill or injured. However, it is better to not attempt to rescue large adult mammals by yourself, even if you come across an animal caught in a trap. But that does not mean you cannot help them at all.
Instead of doing nothing, it is better to practice empathy and from that position seek to help those in need by contacting a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. It is very important that this help is not what we want to give, but how the suffering being really needs it.
Here is how it happened to this little creature, found a few months ago and in a state where it is difficult to determine what kind of animal it is.
This little girl known as “Princess” was crouching behind a ceramic vase on the front porch of Sharon Bertozzi’s house, who discovered her. Sharon claimed that she had been in that position for almost four hours. At the time she found the poor living being, Sharon wrote on her Facebook : “she was so sick that you couldn’t tell what animal she was at first”.
Then, facing the situation, Sharon decided to establish contact with Folsom City Animal Services to have them come to the rescue of this small animal. Sharon commented that her heart was very sad for her.
At first, people thought it was a sick dog. Rescue crews identified the animal as a wolf with very specific scabies, a tick-borne skin disease that can lead to hair loss, intense itching, and skin irritation.
The princess is also very dehydrated. The rescue team transported the girl to Gold Country Wildlife Rescue (GCWR) in Loomis, California, for further treatment.
At GCWR, Princess was given a hydrating solution and medication to help ease the itch and start curing scabies. After her first bath, she started scratching less and eating more! Those are good signs that she has recovered well, although there would be still a long way to go for her to recover quickly. The goal was for Princess to fully recover so she could return to her natural habitat.
After the initial phase of her rehabilitation, which focused on curing her mange, Princess was transferred to Sierra Wildlife Rescue in Placerville, California, as there were no other coyotes at GCWR to share the various activities of their species with them.
In this new shelter, she would get in touch with two other puppies her age. Since coyotes were pack animals, Princess quickly bonded with her new packmates.
At the end of last week and after a few months, he was finally back where he belonged with his new friends! The three coyotes were released, with the full permission of the owners.
Princesa made the most incredible effort to make her recovery fast and complete!
The City of Folsom Animal Services says it was an absolutely thrilling experience to see these coyotes run together, returning to the wild they all deserve. It was a very rewarding adventure for everyone involved in the process to finally be healthy and free.
