A dog covered in gasoline and set on fire in Memphis, Tennessee, has received huge attention from social media users across the globe.
Riona, as she was newly named, was discovered “screaming and on fire” while sprinting down the road. She was rescued up by Tails of Hope Dog Rescue(THDR) and taken right away to a doctor for treatment.
While Riona is on the path to recovery, staff at Tails of Hope Dog Rescue started searching for the evil person who caused her such a damage. They received assistance from people all over the world in their hunt.
The rescue started a TikTok channel dedicated to Riona and she quickly became viral. When Riona’s initial video about her life went viral, people all around the world came together to support the puppy and track down her abuser.
Money for rewards started to stream in, and soon the rescue was offering $20,000 for information that would result in the capture and conviction of the person who had set Riona on fire.
Riona was being treated for her wounds round-the-clock at the veterinarian’s clinic. She had to wear full-body bandages, have her clothes changed frequently. Eventually, Riona would have skin grafting surgery to cover her burns.
With 4th-degree burns covering 60% of her body, her injuries very well may have been life-threatening. Fortunately, she was in good hands, and the staff was committed to assisting her recovery.
A Facebook update from the rescue stated that Riona was making a good recovery and that police were seriously involved in the situation.
“So yes things are being done to not only care for her and help in her long road to recovery but we are also making sure her story is spread and shared so awareness can be made not only to what happened to her but to the horrific abuse that goes on everyday all over to these poor animals. Many others shared their stories, and sadly most of the abused dogs are pits. It needs to stop.”
Riona had old scars from previous injuries, which indicates that she had been subjected to continued abuse. The incident was not a one-time thing, according to a separate post they made.
The Memphis Police Department has exciting news to share: they made an arrest in Riona’s case! While many dogs never receive the justice they merit, Riona gladly did!
They posted on Facebook that they were able to identify Quishon Brown, 43, as a suspect after reviewing security footage and witness accounts.
Brown was charged with “Aggravated Animal Cruelty, Arson to wit Set Fire to Personal Property, and Simple Assault.”
Riona still has a long way until full recovery but she can rest easy knowing her abuser is behind bars!
