Jazz was abandoned by his mother when he was only two days old, but he found a friend in Hunter, a Belgian Malinois shepherd who enjoys caring for the most vulnerable animals in an orphanage. Hunter had to say farewell to his best friend not long ago.

Jazz was discovered dehydrated and alone by a farmer a few days after his birth. They sought assistance from The Rhino Orphanage in Limpopo, South Africa, where Jazz met Hunter and was well cared for until his passing.

The two creatures got quite close, and many on social media fell in love with them and their lovely bond.

Hunter appeared to understand something was amiss with his pal Jazz on Friday, December 6. The newborn giraffe began to stumble unexpectedly, and Hunter stayed at his side until he passed.

Jazz fell due to a cerebral bleed, according to orphanage caregivers.

On Facebook, staff wrote:

“Jazz began to appear shaky in his legs and quite bored in the final two days before we lost him, almost as if he wasn’t recording anything. He fainted unexpectedly, and blood began to pool in his eyes.”

“Jazz’s heart rate dropped and he displayed neurological symptoms. Hunter, his companion, realized something was awry when he found himself standing next to the giraffe without moving. Jazz passed with Hunter and all of his human mothers by his side.”

Hunter sat in front of his empty room for hours after Jazz passed.

The article continued:

“So we now know Jazz didn’t have a bad giraffe mother who abandoned him; she just knew. Mother Nature, as we have seen over and again, is aware of this. But, no matter how tough it is, we must try every time.”

Hunter, for his part, has recovered from his loss and has continued to assist other animals at the orphanage.

“Hunter is all right. He stayed till the end and said his final goodbyes. We’ll keep everyone updated on his progress, as he may now be trained as a tracking dog. He’s eating well and has resumed playing with his sibling. What a good boy.”

Hunter is now keeping an eye on Kolisi, a wounded baby rhinoceros that was taken in by the orphanage.

* Update on Jazz *

It has been a long night but things are looking up. Jazz just slowly sucked on his first bottle of milk at 7am this morning. He kept on falling asleep between bouts of sucking but what a fantastic start to the day . One sleepy, content little giraffe

Our anti-poaching and security dog, Hunter has fallen head over heals for the little giraffe and has claimed ownership since Jazz’s arrival. He stays in the room all day with Jazz and the carers and doesn’t allow his brother Duke close. So concerned was Hunt about Jazz when he was in coma that he didn’t want to eat. Not even he is doing better, but Hunter has his appetite too.
