A vulnerable and hairless old dog had great luck trying to ingratiate a couple.
Danielle Finley and her boyfriend were driving down a dirt road in rural Pennsylvania,USA. They saw a small animal running towards them. They thought it was a raccoon or something like that, but they never imagined it to be a dog.
“We thought it was going to slide out of the way in a minute, so we kept driving. But he didn’t sneak away, so we stopped, and he came running and looked into the car,” Danielle said.
A poor hairless dog desperately was looking for help. That is when they took a closer look to the animal. It turned out to be an elderly, hairless cairn terrier.
“We actually had two of our other dogs, our two Boston terriers with us, so we got out of the car and checked out. He was kind, so we got out some dog food and some water.”
They named the dog Phil. The poor living being devoured the food and water that the couple offered him. But Danielle knew they had to do a lot more for him. If he belonged to someone, he was definitely lost.
And if he belonged to no one, he could not stay there alone. So they did not hesitate to pick him up to take him home. They first thought that Phil had scabies, a contagious condition caused by mites that burrow into the skin and cause hair loss.
The vet also gave them another diagnosis that surprised them. It was a very severe skin condition, just from being out in the open. Danielle’s heart broke in two to discover that the mere fact of abandonment and helplessness left him hairless, itchy and smelling unbearable.
“The bottom of his teeth are crushed, so his theory is that it is probably because he was kept in a box all the time. Eventually, he was abandoned because his health issues got out of control.”
But regardless of how hard his past could have been, the good news was that Phil had found his forever home. For Danielle and her boyfriend, although it was really difficult to support and care for him, they no longer felt capable of closing their doors and hearts to him.
“We have three other dogs, so why not add one more to the clan?” said the admirable woman
For now, Phil is on a special diet to help him get better, and his fur is slowly growing back. Little by little a faint fuzz is coming out on his skin. Sadly, he will have some permanent patches, but Danielle only cares about repairing her heart.
Many people when they see Phil, say that he looks like a hyena or “chupacabra”. But for his owner, when he looks into his eyes, he is definitely the sweetest, most beautiful and lovable creature that can exist.
“He just wants to lie down and relax with you all the time. On top of that, there is his little face. He has that look in his eyes like he is grateful all the time. It is like he cannot believe he has a comfortable place to lie down every day.”
Phil gets along well with Finley’s three other rescue dogs, though he has formed a particularly close bond with his oldest Boston terrier, Lily.
“They spend a lot of time snuggling together. You can almost always see them crammed together,” said Danielle with a laugh
Phil seems to know how lucky he is, and he is constantly showing affection. His owner proudly admits that she is definitely the happiest and luckiest person to have it in her life.
It’s heartwarming to watch a little dog with a twist of fate find his angels in the right place who changed his life forever.
